About Us

Limina is an open-access, peer-reviewed academic journal. Its fundamental purpose and most basic intent is to advance the study of unidentified aerospace phenomena to the next level of serious, rigorous, academic scholarship. Limina takes its name from the two ways of defining the adjective “liminal”, both of which we see as relevant and necessary for understanding the study of the multifaceted UAP phenomenon. The first definition of “liminal” is “a transitional or initial stage of a process”. In our case, this is the process of advancing the study of the UAP phenomenon in the direction of some future science that is capable of accounting for the phenomenon as a whole, to include its many anomalous layers (from the more physical to the more psychical). The second definition of “liminal” is “occupying a position at or both sides of a boundary or threshold”. In our case, this directly relates to what Limina will study: the UAP phenomenon as precisely one existing at the boundary or threshold of what is considered ordinary or normal, or what is considered an acceptable object of serious academic and/or scientific investigation.

Despite the growing awareness as to the existence of UAP resulting from revelations by the military, government agencies, and legitimate mainstream media, and despite the increased discussions on social media platforms, currently there exists no serious academic journal devoted specifically to the multifaceted UAP phenomenon. Limina is meant to rectify this oversight. As the world is now beginning to acknowledge the reality of UAP, the study of UAP is entering a new phase, wherein more scientists, other academic researchers, and major academic institutions are engaged in a serious effort to describe, understand, and explain UAP. Just as with the Journal of Consciousness Studies in its inception in the 90s, before there was any agreement as to what a science of consciousness was and ought to be, Limina will be multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary, to include for example psychology and the social sciences, as well as the natural sciences and humanities. Indeed, given the infant status of academic UAP studies, the journal will also entertain submissions on foundational and methodological questions pertaining to what a science investigating this kind of a phenomenon ought to look like, e.g., what phenomena reasonably counts as relevant under the UAP topic and crucial epistemological issues about what ought to count as legitimate evidence to reason about, such as certain kinds of first-person testimony.

UAP Studies is presented here as a matrix field rather than a single discipline. Submissions may be empirical, experimental, interpretive, historical, philosophical, policy-oriented, artistic, experiential, or hybrid—but each must make its evidentiary basis, method, and claims discipline visible.

How manuscripts move from submission to decision.

Limina uses double-blind peer review. The sequence below keeps the original process language intact while making each editorial stage easy to scan.

Limina employs a rigorous double-blind academic review process. Therefore the identity of both author and reviewer is kept hidden from each. In this way the reviewer cannot form any particular view about the author of a work, and so may proceed to evaluate it on its own internal merits. Authors are therefore strongly advised to remove all identifying features from their paper in order to better ensure the integrity of the double-blind process.

Upon receipt of an article submitted to Limina, the editor-in-chief, in consultation with the associate editor, will (by an initial read of the work) determine if the work meets the general criteria of publication at Limina, meaning they will determine whether the article at least falls within the scope of the journal.

If the managing editors determine that the article falls within the scope of the journal, they will then distribute the article to the staff editor whose expertise best matches the field of study within which the article is conceived. This reader will determine whether the submission holds itself to the highest standards of academic scholarship, clarity of writing and conception. They will also determine if the article is of sufficient merit to warrant formal peer review by Limina. The article may be rejected at this point.

Should the article be deemed admissible to Limina and of sufficient merit to warrant formal review, the submission is then distributed by the relevant editorial board member(s) to the appropriate set of referees/reviewers of their choosing. At least two, possibly three or even up to four, referees will be selected by the relevant Editorial Board member (who will then act in a supervisory role, overseeing the process for the article being reviewed).

Referees will then decide on the relative merits and outstanding problems of the paper, and submit a report back to the supervisory editors with any one of the following recommendations: (1) accept without revision; (2) accept but revise with minor changes; (3) revise with major changes and resubmit; (4) reject.

Communication of the decision of the referees (reject, revise and resubmit, etc.) to authors should occur within six to eight weeks following acknowledgment of submission into Limina by the chief editor.

Final publication in Limina is at the ultimate discretion of the chief and associate editors, with significant input possibly from the Editorial Board as a whole, and is also conditional upon the positive acceptance of the referees after all required or relevant revisions have been satisfactorily completed.

Revision is expected; clarity and scholarly discipline still matter.

The guidance below preserves Limina’s stated revision and rejection standards, including the journal’s discretion to reject at any point when revisions are inadequate.

Typically, articles that are granted consideration are not immediately accepted after an initial reading by reviewers. Authors are usually asked to make certain revisions at various stages in the review process.

However, in certain cases, a reviewer might reject the work outright, in which case the chief and associate editors will determine if such rejection is truly merited, and, if so, construct a clear and concise response to the author communicating the rejection and the reasons given for it.

Where a paper can be improved, either slightly or significantly, such will be communicated to the author by the editors in charge of the paper in a timely manner. After revisions, the editors will determine if the referee's comments have been adequately addressed, or if further review is warranted (in which case another round of referee work will be initiated).

In all circumstances, Limina reserves the right to reject any submission at any stage of the review process should the relevant revisions be addressed poorly or otherwise inadequately. Again, the final determination for publication decisions rests with the Editor-In-Chief and the Associate Editor.

Common reasons for rejection include but are not limited to:

  • the argument of the paper is not presented in a sensible or logical order, or is otherwise unclear
  • the argument of the paper is simply, on its own merits, not cogent or it has not been properly supported by the relevant evidence
  • there is a lack of sound theoretical basis for the paper's argument(s), and/or the evidence and facts presented in the paper are done so without proper argumentation or analysis

It should also be noted that papers submitted to Limina should not require major editing in terms of the basics like spelling, grammar, style, etc., and so it is conceivable that a paper might be rejected just because of these factors alone, irrespective of the content of the paper.

The following is a detailed description of each submission type that Limina will accept. Authors should consult this list prior to submitting their manuscript, and should also treat it as a detailed stylistic and content guide in the composition of the work they intend to be considered by Limina's editors. Failure to adhere to these general guidelines is grounds for immediate rejection of the manuscript (without a more detailed review of the work itself).

01 Original research Research Articles Original studies for the sciences, humanities, social sciences, or interdisciplinary UAP studies.

A research article presents the findings of a research study conducted by the author(s) of the paper. It serves as a means of communicating original research to the academic community. Research articles are considered one of the primary sources of knowledge in various fields and are essential for advancing understanding in the sciences, humanities and social & human sciences.

The exact formatting of a research article in Limina can vary depending on what community of scholars (in the humanities, in STEM or the social and human sciences) for which the article is primarily intended. Nonetheless, there are some common elements and sections that should be included in most research articles submitted to Limina. Here is a general outline of the formatting and sections that will be expected from authors of original research articles:

Title: The title should accurately and concisely describe the research study's topic and main focus.

Abstract: The abstract should be a brief summary of the research article, providing a concise overview of the study's objectives, methods, results, and conclusions. The abstract should be limited to no more than 300 words.

Introduction: The introduction should provide the necessary background information and context for the research study. It should outline the research problem, states the research objectives or questions, and reviews relevant existing literature or theories. The introduction aims to justify the significance and relevance of the research.

Literature Review: The literature review section critically evaluates existing research and scholarly works related to the research topic. It identifies gaps, controversies, or inconsistencies in the literature and highlights the need for the current study being submitted to Limina. The literature review also helps to establish the theoretical framework or conceptual basis for the research.

Methods: The methods section describes in detail how the research study was conducted. It should include information on the study design, data collection procedures, sample size and selection criteria, instrumentation or measures used, and any statistical or analytical techniques employed. The methods section should provide sufficient detail for other researchers to replicate the study. (Note: a "methods" section is not necessarily relevant for research articles in the humanities.)

Results: The results section presents the findings of the research study. It typically includes tables, graphs, or figures to illustrate the data. The results should be reported objectively and accurately, with appropriate statistical analysis and interpretation. Raw data is usually not included but should be made be available upon request.

Discussion: The discussion section interprets and analyzes the results in the context of the research objectives and relevant literature. It explores the implications of the findings, compares them to previous research, and discusses any limitations or weaknesses of the study. The discussion may also suggest future research directions and provide recommendations based on the study's outcomes.

Conclusion: The conclusion section summarizes the main findings of the study and restates their significance. It should be concise and avoid introducing new information or arguments not previously discussed.

References: The references section lists all the sources cited in the research article, and should generally follow the "Chicago" style. Each reference entry should include the authors' names, publication year, title, journal or book title, volume or edition, and page numbers.

In addition to these sections, some research articles may include supplementary materials, acknowledgments, or appendices. For more technical articles submitted to Limina, we ask that all calculations and other highly technical details (which are appropriate for the expert reader) be included as a separate appendix found at the end of the article.

02 Critical essay Essays Interpretive, critical, or interdisciplinary work that contributes to scholarly discourse.

Essays differ from strict research articles, which often are of a scientific kind. A non-scientific essay article is a type of academic writing that explores a specific topic from a subjective or interdisciplinary perspective. Unlike scientific articles, which adhere to a rigorous research methodology and present empirical data, non-scientific essay articles focus on providing critical analysis, interpretation, or personal insights on a subject of interest. These articles offer a platform for scholars to engage in broader discussions, address societal or cultural issues, or present innovative ideas.

Here is a detailed description of the key elements and components that will be expected from essays submitted to Limina:

Title: The article should have a clear and compelling title that reflects the content and scope of the work. The title should capture the reader's attention and provide a preview of the article's main theme or argument.

Abstract: An abstract summarizing the main ideas, arguments, and implications of the article should be provided. The abstract should be no more than 300 words and provide a concise overview of the article's key points.

Introduction: This section should introduce the topic or issue under discussion in the essay, and provide the necessary background information, and should set the context for the essay as a whole. It may present the author's motivation for exploring the subject and outline the main objectives or questions addressed in the article.

Body: The body of the essay should present the author's analysis, interpretation, or critical discussion of the topic. It should be divided into coherent sections or paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect or argument.
